Moorlands Primary

English Intent Statement

At Moorlands Primary School, our English curriculum is designed to develop confident, articulate, and creative communicators who can express themselves fluently in both spoken and written forms. We believe that strong literacy skills are the foundation for academic success and lifelong learning.

From the early years, we focus on building secure transcriptional skills, ensuring that children develop accurate spelling, handwriting, and punctuation. As they progress through Key Stage 1, pupils are supported in developing their fluency, enabling them to write with increasing confidence, accuracy, and independence. This work is built upon in Key Stage 2, where children refine their writing stamina, structure, and precision, applying their transcriptional skills across a range of genres and contexts.

A rich and varied vocabulary is central to our curriculum, with children exposed to high-quality texts that expand their language and comprehension. Through reading, discussion, and explicit vocabulary instruction, we empower pupils to use ambitious and precise language in their spoken and written work.
